A 27-year-old Newport News man was killed in a single-vehicle crash early Wednesday morning on Interstate 64 in York County, according to Virginia State Police.<\/p>\n
Authorities report that the crash occurred at approximately 4:33 a.m. on the westbound lanes of I-64 near the 237-mile marker. Investigators say the vehicle traveled off the right side of the roadway for reasons that have not yet been determined, struck a tree, and overturned.<\/p>\n
The driver has been identified as Tyrique Gilliam, 27, of Newport News. He suffered fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene.<\/p>\n
A 20-year-old female passenger was also in the vehicle at the time of the crash. Officials say she sustained minor injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. Her condition has not been reported as serious.<\/p>\n
Emergency responders arrived quickly and secured the scene while assisting the injured passenger and working to clear the wreckage. Traffic in the area was temporarily affected during the investigation and cleanup, but all lanes of Interstate 64 have since reopened.<\/p>\n
Virginia State Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. At this time, it is not clear what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway, and officials have not indicated whether speed, fatigue, or other contributing factors may have played a role.<\/p>\n
