NORFOLK, Va. \u2014 The U.S. Navy has identified Cmdr. Gabriel Edwards, the commanding officer of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 5 (HSC-5), as the sailor who went missing following a helicopter emergency landing in the Arabian Sea on July 1.<\/p>\n
After more than 102 hours of search and rescue efforts covering more than 14,000 square miles, the Navy suspended the search on Sunday. The extensive operation involved ships and aircraft from two carrier strike groups, patrol and reconnaissance squadrons flying P-8A Poseidon aircraft, and multiple U.S. Air Force aircraft.<\/p>\n
Cmdr. Edwards\u2019 disappearance has brought deep sorrow to the naval aviation community, his family, and those who served alongside him. Military leaders described him as a dedicated officer, respected mentor, and fearless leader whose commitment to service left a lasting impact.<\/p>\n
\u201cGabe\u2019s legacy as a husband, father, friend and fearless leader will never be forgotten,\u201d said Rear Adm. Todd Cimicata, commander of Carrier Strike Group 10. He expressed support for the Edwards family and praised the efforts of those who participated in the search mission.<\/p>\n
Capt. Matthew Lewis, commander of Carrier Air Wing 7, remembered Edwards as a leader who dedicated two decades of his life to service and sacrifice. He said Edwards led HSC-5, known as the \u201cNightdippers,\u201d with integrity and strength, creating a legacy that will continue within the squadron.<\/p>\n
Edwards was a native of Oakland, Oregon, and graduated from Norfolk State University in 2006 with a bachelor\u2019s degree in physics. He commissioned through the Naval ROTC program and earned his aviator \u201cWings of Gold\u201d in 2008 as a helicopter pilot.<\/p>\n
Throughout his naval career, Edwards served with several aviation commands, including HSC-22, HSC-84, Naval Special Warfare Group 4, HSC-85, and later took command of HSC-5 in July 2025. He accumulated more than 2,000 flight hours and earned numerous military honors for his service.<\/p>\n
Edwards is survived by his wife, Rebecca, their two children, extended family members, and fellow sailors who will continue to carry his memory.<\/p>\n
In a statement, Rebecca Edwards described her husband as a man who served his country with honor, courage, and commitment. She said he led with humility and compassion, always putting others before himself, while his greatest joy was being a husband and father.<\/p>\n
The Edwards family expressed gratitude for the countless sailors, aviators, airmen, friends, and supporters who participated in the search and offered prayers and messages of support.<\/p>\n
As the family begins the difficult process of grieving, they have requested privacy while remembering a man they described as a devoted husband, loving father, and extraordinary leader.<\/p>\n
