Family, friends, and loved ones of Kevin W. Meyers, 54, of LaPorte, Indiana, are mourning his tragic death following a devastating series of events that unfolded during a stolen vehicle pursuit and ended in a police-involved shooting in rural LaPorte County.<\/p>\n
According to authorities, the incident began early Friday morning when Indiana State Police troopers responded to Interstate 94 to assist Berrien County, Michigan authorities with a stolen vehicle pursuit that crossed into Indiana.<\/p>\n
During the pursuit, officials said the suspect fired multiple rounds from a rifle and pointed the weapon at pursuing officers. The pursuit continued onto local roads, where the suspect temporarily avoided capture.<\/p>\n
Authorities said an Indiana State Trooper later located the suspect vehicle, a silver 2019 Ford F-150, near I-94 and U.S. 421. A collision occurred between the suspect\u2019s truck and the trooper\u2019s patrol vehicle. Officials said the suspect then opened fire from inside the truck, striking the patrol vehicle and injuring Sgt. Justin Heflin, a 12-year veteran of the Indiana State Police and a United States Marine Corps veteran.<\/p>\n
Responding troopers quickly provided assistance and transported Sgt. Heflin for emergency medical treatment. He was later transferred to Memorial Hospital in South Bend, where he underwent successful surgery and was reported to be in stable condition.<\/p>\n
A large-scale manhunt followed as multiple law enforcement agencies searched for the suspect. Around 9:16 a.m., the Lake County Sheriff\u2019s Aviation Unit located the Ford F-150 hidden in a tree line in rural LaPorte County.<\/p>\n
Authorities said gunfire was heard from a nearby cornfield as officers approached the area. No additional officers were injured. Tactical teams were deployed, and Kevin W. Meyers was later found deceased in the cornfield with injuries consistent with gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the LaPorte County Coroner.<\/p>\n
