A tragic crash in Godfrey has claimed the life of Anthony M. Stewart, 31, of Alton, leaving family, friends, and the community grieving his sudden loss.<\/p>\n
According to the Madison County Sheriff\u2019s Office, deputies responded just before 3:30 a.m. to the 7400 block of Montclair Avenue after receiving a phone crash-detection alert. When authorities arrived, they found a black Jeep Grand Cherokee that had left the roadway and crashed into a tree.<\/p>\n
Investigators said the Jeep had been traveling northbound on Montclair Avenue before the collision. For reasons that remain unknown, the vehicle left the roadway, struck a curb and a mailbox, and then overturned several times before coming to a stop.<\/p>\n
Stewart, who was the driver and only occupant of the vehicle, was pronounced deceased following the crash.<\/p>\n
The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation as authorities continue working to determine what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway.<\/p>\n
