Family, friends, and members of the Knott County community are mourning the loss of Melisa Slone, 39, of Garner, who died following a single-vehicle crash early Friday morning.<\/p>\n
According to Kentucky State Police, troopers from Post 13 in Hazard responded shortly before 4:00 a.m. on July 17, 2026, to a crash on KY-15 in the Sassafras community of Knott County.<\/p>\n
A preliminary investigation found that Slone was driving a white Chevrolet Silverado northbound on KY-15 when the vehicle struck a rock in the roadway. The impact caused the truck to lose control and overturn, resulting in Slone being ejected from the vehicle.<\/p>\n
The Knott County Coroner\u2019s Office pronounced Slone deceased at the scene.<\/p>\n
Authorities said a preliminary investigation indicated that no seat belt was in use at the time of the crash. Alcohol is believed to have been a contributing factor, and toxicology results are still pending.<\/p>\n
The investigation remains ongoing and is being led by Kentucky State Police Trooper Todd Whitson.<\/p>\n
