BIRMINGHAM, Ala. \u2014 A late-night shooting in southwest Birmingham claimed the life of a 53-year-old man after a barrage of gunfire erupted outside an apartment building Monday night.<\/p>\n
The Jefferson County Coroner\u2019s Office identified the victim as Mark Jhawntee Louis, 53, of Birmingham.<\/p>\n
According to authorities, officers with the Birmingham Police Department\u2019s West Precinct were dispatched at approximately 10:42 p.m. Monday to an apartment building located at 1017 Tuscaloosa Avenue after the city\u2019s Shot Spotter system detected 16 rounds of gunfire in the area.<\/p>\n
When officers arrived at the scene, they found Louis lying outside the two-story apartment building. He was pronounced dead at the scene from apparent gunshot wounds.<\/p>\n
Birmingham Police Sgt. LaQuitta Wade said nearby residents heard the sound of gunfire, discovered the injured victim outside the building, and immediately called 911 for help.<\/p>\n
Investigators have not released any information about a possible suspect or motive in the shooting. No arrests have been made as detectives continue working to determine the circumstances that led to the deadly incident.<\/p>\n
The shooting marks Birmingham\u2019s 26th homicide of the year, adding to concerns surrounding violent crime in the city.<\/p>\n
