Man Fatally Shot During Police Encounter on Colonial Avenue

A 24-year-old man has been identified as the individual who died following an officer-involved shooting on Thursday afternoon in Evansville, Indiana.

According to the Evansville Police Department, the incident occurred in the 500 block of Colonial Avenue after dispatchers received a call around 1 p.m. reporting a possible overdose at a residence.

Police said a plainclothes officer who was already nearby responded to the emergency before additional units arrived. As the officer approached the home, the man exited the residence armed with a handgun and allegedly fired at the officer.

The officer returned fire, striking the suspect. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials confirmed that a woman and a child were inside the residence during the exchange, but neither was injured.

Following department policy, the officer involved has been placed on administrative leave while the investigation continues.

Authorities say the circumstances surrounding the initial call and the events leading up to the shooting remain under active investigation as evidence is reviewed.
