Man Arrested After Calling 911 Following Wife’s Death in Indiana Shooting

A Harrison County woman was tragically killed Thursday night after being shot inside her home, prompting an active homicide investigation and the arrest of her husband, according to the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department.

The victim has been identified as Sara M. Lang, 40, of Mauckport.

Authorities said the investigation began at approximately 9:59 p.m. on Thursday, July 2, 2026, when Harrison County 911 Dispatch received a call from a man reporting what he described as an accidental gunshot at a residence on Hillcrest Drive.

When Harrison County Sheriff’s deputies arrived at the home, they found Sara Lang suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. Despite emergency response efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 911 caller was identified as Stephen Ray Lang, 32, Sara’s husband. Following the preliminary investigation, detectives arrested him in connection with the fatal shooting. He has been preliminarily charged with Murder, Domestic Battery, Intimidation, and Pointing a Firearm.

Investigators determined that a 9mm semi-automatic handgun was used in the shooting. Authorities also confirmed that two juvenile children, a 4-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy, were inside the residence when the incident occurred. Officials have not released additional information regarding the children’s condition.

An autopsy has been scheduled as Harrison County detectives and the Harrison County Coroner continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Sara Lang’s death. Additional details have not yet been released.

The tragic incident has left family members, friends, and the Mauckport community grieving the loss of Sara M. Lang while investigators work to determine the events leading up to the shooting. Authorities remind the public that the investigation remains ongoing and that all defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
