According to authorities, Jackson County Central Dispatch received a 911 call around 4:51 p.m. after reports of a swimmer in distress who had gone underwater and failed to resurface. Wayne had been visiting friends near the north side of Big Wolf Lake and had entered the water with a co-worker to cool off from the extreme heat.
During the incident, efforts were made to reach Wayne and assist him, including attempts to return the boat to his location and a flotation device being thrown toward him. Despite those efforts, Wayne was unable to reach safety and ultimately did not resurface.
A large search operation followed, involving numerous emergency response agencies, dive teams, and public safety personnel from multiple areas. Wayne was located underwater later that evening and was recovered shortly after midnight on July 11. Authorities have indicated that preliminary information points to drowning as the cause of death.
