With profound sadness and heavy hearts, family, friends, and members of the Jarreau, Louisiana, community are mourning the heartbreaking loss of Kelly Downey, 41, whose life ended following a tragic single-vehicle crash early Saturday morning, July 18, 2026, in East Baton Rouge Parish.
According to the Louisiana State Police, troopers responded shortly after 5:30 a.m. to a crash on US 61, also known as Scenic Highway, south of LA 964.
Investigators said Kelly was driving north on US 61 when, for reasons that remain under investigation, the vehicle left the roadway. The vehicle traveled into the median, struck a concrete embankment, and then caught fire.
Kelly suffered fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene by responding authorities.
Louisiana State Police said seat belt use could not be determined because of the extent of the vehicle’s damage. Investigators also said impairment is currently unknown, and a routine toxicology sample was collected and will be submitted for testing as part of the ongoing investigation.
The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation as troopers continue gathering information and working to determine what led to the vehicle leaving the roadway.
