Three people, including two children, were killed in a tragic crash involving an SUV and a tractor-trailer on Monday in Pike County, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Troopers said the crash happened just before 2 p.m. at the intersection of State Route 32 and Coal Dock Road in Union Township.
Investigators said a Chevrolet Traverse, driven by 30-year-old Hannah Howard, was traveling north on Coal Dock Road when it failed to yield at the intersection and entered State Route 32. At that time, the SUV was struck by a tractor-trailer pulling an empty logging trailer.
Authorities confirmed that all three occupants of the SUV—Hannah Howard, 9-year-old Gunner Howard, and 5-year-old Peyton Howard—died from their injuries at the scene.
A 4-year-old passenger inside the vehicle survived the crash and was airlifted to Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus with serious, life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured.
Emergency crews responded quickly and worked at the scene for several hours while troopers conducted an investigation and documented evidence. The intersection was temporarily impacted as authorities cleared the roadway and reconstructed the crash.
Officials said the investigation remains ongoing as troopers continue to review right-of-way rules, roadway conditions, and other contributing factors leading up to the collision.
No further details have been released at this time.
