17-Year-Old Christian Warren Killed in Belzoni Shooting as Community Grapples With Third Deadly Gun Violence Incident in Four Months

BELZONI, Miss. — Another tragic act of gun violence has shaken the small Mississippi community of Belzoni, marking the city’s third deadly shooting in just four months and leaving residents searching for answers as concerns about public safety continue to grow.

The shooting unfolded Wednesday night on Jodie Thurman Street, where neighbors reported hearing a barrage of gunfire that shattered an otherwise quiet evening. Residents described the scene as frightening and chaotic, with multiple rounds echoing through the neighborhood before authorities arrived.

Alderwoman Shonda Hooker, who lives only a few houses from where the shooting occurred, said the sounds resembled an exchange of gunfire.

“It sounded like automatic guns, like it was back and forth like an actual shootout. We did not know anyone got hit, maybe 15 to 20 minutes afterward,” Hooker said.

Authorities later confirmed that the shooting claimed the life of 17-year-old Christian Warren. His death has left family members, friends, classmates, and community members mourning the loss of a young life taken far too soon.

The latest tragedy adds to a troubling pattern of violence that has impacted Belzoni in recent months. In April, a mass shooting claimed the life of 20-year-old Makayla Adams and left five others wounded. Community members later gathered to honor her memory and support her grieving family. More recently, 23-year-old Terry Hall was killed in a shooting outside the Lin Yin building, leading to the arrest of Cordeo Smith.

Many residents say the repeated incidents have created a growing sense of fear and frustration throughout the community.

Local business owner Eugene Jones described the violence as senseless and said it reflects a troubling change from the Belzoni he once knew.

“Violence is never the answer. When you think about how things used to be, you didn’t hear all this. You never heard of people really shooting people,” Jones said.

Belzoni Mayor Eula Davis said city leaders and law enforcement officials are working tirelessly to address the issue but emphasized that solving the problem will require more than policing alone. Davis, who has experienced the pain of losing a child to gun violence herself, said she recently spoke with the victim’s family and understands the heartbreak they are enduring.

“We welcome additional help,” Davis said. “Some of this goes to social issues, so we need that help. Something leads to this kind of violence, and we need to get to the bottom of it.”

As another family faces unimaginable grief, community leaders are calling for unity, intervention, and support to help prevent further violence. Residents hope that by working together, Belzoni can begin to address the root causes behind these tragedies and prevent another young life from being lost.

The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing.
