Teen Student Dies in UTV Crash in Summerfield Township

The Petersburg, Michigan community is grieving the loss of 16-year-old Conor Harrigan, an 11th-grade student at Summerfield High School, who died Friday following a UTV crash in Summerfield Township.

According to Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough, the crash occurred at approximately 5:24 p.m. in the 19700 block of Taft Road. Investigators said Conor was operating a 2021 Polaris Ranger in a private field when he lost control while negotiating a curve, causing the utility vehicle to overturn. The rollover ejected all three occupants from the vehicle.

Conor suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Two juvenile passengers were transported to a local hospital as a precaution and were later released. Authorities reported that none of the occupants were wearing seatbelts, and alcohol is not believed to have been a factor in the crash. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident remains ongoing.

In the wake of this devastating tragedy, Summerfield Schools released a heartfelt statement expressing its deepest condolences to the Harrigan family and acknowledging the profound grief felt across the entire school community. Officials noted that the loss has deeply impacted students, staff, and families who knew Conor as a vibrant and valued member of the school.

To help the community begin to process this heartbreaking loss, the district has scheduled a community remembrance gathering on Saturday, June 27, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the district football field. Local pastors and mental health professionals will be present to provide emotional support as community members come together to honor Conor’s life and support one another through grief.

In addition, Summerfield Schools has arranged counseling and support services for students, staff, and residents who may need assistance during this difficult time. Summerfield High School will also be open on Wednesday, July 1, from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., with mental health professionals and local pastors available to provide guidance and comfort.

With the permission of Mr. and Mrs. Harrigan, the school shared photographs of Conor, describing him as “one of the heartbeats of Summerfield High School.” School officials emphasized that his kindness, positive spirit, and impact on those around him will be remembered and cherished for years to come.

As Petersburg and surrounding communities grieve this unimaginable loss, family, friends, classmates, and neighbors continue to gather in support of the Harrigan family, offering prayers, compassion, and strength during this profoundly difficult time.
