With profound sadness, we remember and honor the lives of Gilbert “Barney” Chapman and Natalie Poupart, two Lac du Flambeau Tribal members whose sudden and tragic passing has left their family, friends, and community in deep mourning.
According to the Lac du Flambeau Tribal Police Department, officers responded to a 911 call on June 27 at approximately 9 p.m. reporting that two individuals were believed to be deceased inside a residence in Lac du Flambeau, Wisconsin. When officers arrived at the scene, Chapman was found deceased on the garage floor, while Poupart was located unresponsive in the living room. Despite immediate CPR efforts by responding officers, Poupart could not be revived.
Additional law enforcement units, including the Lac du Flambeau Tribal Police Department and the Vilas County Sheriff’s Office, worked together to secure and process the scene. Investigators carefully collected evidence as part of an ongoing effort to determine what led to the deaths of both individuals.
Authorities have confirmed that autopsies will be conducted to establish the official causes of death. At this time, investigators report no indication of physical trauma and no evidence suggesting any threat to the wider community. The investigation remains active and ongoing as officials work to provide answers to the victims’ families.
The sudden loss of Chapman and Poupart has deeply impacted the Lac du Flambeau community, where both are being remembered as cherished individuals whose presence touched the lives of those around them.
