One person is dead following a single-vehicle crash overnight on Interstate 55, according to the Madison Police Department.
Authorities say the crash occurred around 1:35 a.m. Monday near mile marker 109 on I-55 southbound. Officers responding to the scene determined that a Volkswagen Passat had left the roadway, crossed into the center median, and struck an embankment in a drainage ditch located between the northbound and southbound lanes of the interstate.
Emergency responders arrived and found the driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, unresponsive. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries sustained in the crash.
Officials later identified the victim as 26-year-old Zariya Imaan Perkins of Olive Branch, Mississippi.
No other vehicles were involved in the incident, according to authorities. The circumstances leading up to the crash remain unclear at this time.
The Madison Police Department says the investigation is ongoing as crash investigators work to determine what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway. Additional details have not yet been released.
Authorities continue to urge caution on area roadways, especially during overnight hours when visibility and reaction times can be reduced.
