PETAL, Miss. — A 25-year-old motorcyclist lost his life following a collision with a passenger vehicle Wednesday evening, according to local authorities.
The fatal crash occurred at approximately 5 p.m. at the intersection of Evelyn Gandy Parkway and Blinker Drive. Petal Police responded to the scene alongside emergency personnel after receiving reports of a serious traffic accident involving a motorcycle and a car.
According to the preliminary investigation, 25-year-old Brett Westmoreland of Lumberton was traveling west on his motorcycle when he collided with a car that was attempting to cross the highway. The impact caused severe damage to both vehicles and left Westmoreland with fatal injuries.
Shortly before 6 p.m., WDAM 7 First Alert Weather SkyCam captured aerial footage showing emergency crews working at the crash scene while investigators examined the area. The footage also showed extensive damage to both the motorcycle and the passenger vehicle.
The Petal Police Department and the Forrest County Coroner’s Office later confirmed the identity of the deceased motorcyclist as Brett Westmoreland of Lumberton.
Authorities said the driver of the car and the passengers inside the vehicle were not injured in the collision.
The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation as officials work to determine what led to the fatal collision. No additional information has been released regarding possible contributing factors or whether any charges will be filed.
Westmoreland’s death has left his family, friends, and the Lumberton community mourning the tragic loss of a young man whose life was cut short. Further information is expected as the investigation continues.
