Hampton, N.H. Shooting Suspect Identified; Autopsy Confirms Death by Suicide

A shooting incident in Hampton, New Hampshire, has left multiple people injured and prompted an ongoing multi-agency investigation, according to officials.

Attorney General John M. Formella, New Hampshire State Police Colonel Mark B. Hall, and Hampton Police Chief Alexander J. Reno confirmed that officers were dispatched at approximately 1:19 a.m. to 29 Ocean Boulevard after reports of shots fired. When officers arrived, they located a 23-year-old male and a 25-year-old female suffering from gunshot wounds. Both victims were transported to a hospital for treatment and remain under medical care.

Shortly after the initial response, officers located a suspect near the intersection of P Street and Ashworth Avenue who matched the description provided by witnesses. Officials stated that during the encounter, the male suspect produced a handgun and raised it. He then shot himself in the head while an officer simultaneously discharged a single round.

The suspect was identified as Tyshawn Cooper, 21, of Taylors, South Carolina, and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

An autopsy conducted on July 5, 2026, by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined that Cooper’s cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head, and the manner of death was ruled suicide.

Authorities confirmed that no officers were injured during the incident. Although an officer discharged a weapon during the encounter, investigators clarified that the officer did not cause Cooper’s death. The Attorney General’s Office will still carry out a standard deadly force investigation as part of protocol.

Officials emphasized that the investigation remains active, and additional details will be released once formal interviews are completed and investigative steps are finalized.

The incident remains under review as authorities work to fully reconstruct the events leading up to the shooting.
