The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) and the Jackson community are mourning the tragic loss of Cathy Sims, who was identified by her family as the TDOT employee killed after a train struck a department maintenance vehicle on Wednesday morning in Haywood County, Tennessee.
According to officials, the fatal collision occurred at approximately 10:40 a.m. on State Route 179 near the town of Stanton. Preliminary information released by authorities indicates that the TDOT maintenance vehicle was attempting to cross the railroad tracks when the crossing warning system activated and the crossing gates began to lower.
Stanton Mayor Norman Bauer said early findings suggest Sims tried to clear the railroad crossing before the approaching train reached the intersection. Despite those efforts, the train collided with the maintenance vehicle with tremendous force, ejecting Sims from the vehicle. She suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Although officials initially withheld the victim’s identity pending family notification, loved ones later confirmed that the worker who lost her life was Cathy Sims.
The heartbreaking incident has sent shockwaves through the local community and among TDOT employees, many of whom are grieving the sudden loss of a respected coworker. Friends and family remember Sims as a hardworking, dedicated, and compassionate individual whose commitment to public service reflected her character and devotion to helping others.
The crash remains under active investigation as officials work to determine the exact circumstances that led to the collision. Investigators are expected to review evidence from the scene, including the operation of the railroad crossing signals, witness statements, and other factors that may have contributed to the tragedy.
As family, friends, and colleagues come together to honor Cathy Sims’ life, many are remembering not only her dedication to her work but also the kindness and warmth she shared with those around her. Her passing is a profound loss to everyone who knew her.
Heartfelt prayers and deepest condolences continue to be extended to the Sims family, her friends, and her fellow TDOT employees during this incredibly difficult time. May Cathy Sims be remembered for her life of service, and may her memory forever remain a blessing to all who loved her.
