The DeKalb community and loved ones are grieving the tragic loss of Joel Ellestad, 22, Payton Butler, 24, Ty Byrd, 20, and Dru Wilson, 23, whose lives ended following a tragic head-on crash early Saturday morning, July 11, 2026, on U.S. Highway 259 near DeKalb, Texas.
The heartbreaking collision claimed the lives of four individuals and has left families, friends, and loved ones devastated. Their sudden passing has created a deep void as those who knew them remember their lives, the memories they shared, and the impact they made on the people around them.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the crash occurred around 3:20 a.m., approximately four miles south of DeKalb. Investigators said a Nissan Altima traveling north crossed into the southbound lane and collided head-on with a Dodge Charger.
The three occupants of the Dodge Charger were identified as Joel Ellestad, Payton Butler, and Ty Byrd. Authorities said all three were pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the Nissan Altima, Dru Wilson of DeKalb, also sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
