Family, friends, colleagues, and members of the New Berlin, Illinois, community are mourning the heartbreaking loss of Terry Nydegger, the longtime New Berlin Chief of Police whose life ended in a tragic hit-and-run crash.
According to the Sangamon County Rescue Squad, Terry was killed while returning home from a vacation in Wisconsin on Monday. The Wisconsin State Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Terry Nydegger dedicated nearly five decades of his life to serving others. He proudly served the citizens of Sangamon County for 48 years, leaving behind a legacy built on honor, dedication, and commitment to his community.
Beyond his role as New Berlin’s police chief, Terry was deeply involved in public service. He served on the village board since 1983, worked as a medic for the SWAT team, served with the Sangamon County dive team, and continuously gave his time and experience to help others.
The Sangamon County Rescue Squad described Terry as a respected leader whose calm presence, hands-on experience, and steady guidance helped save lives and support those around him during countless emergencies. He was also the longest-serving active member of the organization.
New Berlin Mayor Mike Krall, a longtime friend of Terry’s, said the community is devastated by the loss of someone who dedicated so much of his life to helping others. Terry’s impact reached far beyond his official duties, as he was known for his kindness, service, and commitment to the people around him.
Terry’s sudden passing has left a deep void in the hearts of his family, friends, fellow first responders, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy of service and compassion will continue to be remembered throughout the community he devoted his life to protecting.
