A 19-year-old man has been charged with murder following a deadly shooting that left a 20-year-old man dead in Horn Lake late Saturday night, according to police.
Officers with the Horn Lake Police Department responded at approximately 11:15 p.m. on Saturday, June 13, to a residence in the 5200 block of Chickasaw Cove after receiving reports of a shooting.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found 20-year-old Kejuan Williams of Horn Lake suffering from a gunshot wound. Authorities confirmed that Williams died at the scene from a single gunshot wound to the head.
Investigators quickly identified the suspected shooter as 19-year-old Elijah Avent, also of Horn Lake. Police said Avent fled the scene immediately after the shooting, prompting a search by officers.
Authorities later located Avent and took him into custody without further incident. Jail records show he was booked into the DeSoto County Jail at approximately 9:30 a.m. on Sunday.
Avent has since been charged with one count of murder and is currently being held without bond, according to court records. He is scheduled to appear in court on July 16 at 9 a.m.
Police stated that the incident appears to have been isolated, and investigators confirmed that the suspect and victim knew each other prior to the shooting.
At this time, a motive has not been determined, and officials say the investigation remains ongoing as detectives continue gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses to understand what led to the deadly encounter.
The fatal shooting has left the Horn Lake community shaken as authorities continue their work in the case.
