A teen who was suspected of drowning in a small neighborhood lake in Petal on Sunday night has been identified by authorities, according to Forrest County Coroner Lisa Klem.
Emergency responders were called to the scene following reports of a possible drowning in the Petal area. Despite immediate efforts from first responders, the teen was recovered from the water and later pronounced deceased.
The victim has been identified as 18-year-old Cayden Magee.
Magee had recently graduated from Petal High School in May, marking a proud milestone celebrated by family, friends, and teachers. According to public posts from those close to him, he was known as an outstanding student who consistently showed academic excellence, dedication, and determination throughout his school years.
He graduated with honors and earned several academic distinctions, including an Academic Endorsement, Career & Technical Endorsement, and ACT Benchmark achievement. Those who knew him described him as a driven, respectful, and focused young man who took his education seriously and worked hard to reach his goals.
Following graduation, Magee had already planned for his future, having committed to Mississippi State University, where he intended to pursue a pre-med track. His aspirations reflected a strong passion for learning and a desire to enter the medical field to help others.
The news of his sudden passing has left family members, friends, classmates, and the Petal community in deep shock and sorrow. Many are remembering him as a bright and promising young man whose life was just beginning to unfold.
Officials have confirmed that an autopsy will be conducted to determine the official cause and manner of death. At this time, authorities say no foul play is suspected.
