In Loving Memory of Ethan Hillman

With heavy heart, we remember and honor the life of Ethan Hillman, 19, of Smyrna, who tragically lost his life following a shooting at Wilmington Hospital on June 16.

The incident occurred inside the hospital in the 500 block of West 14th Street and led to an immediate lockdown as law enforcement responded to reports of gunfire. Authorities later confirmed that two 19-year-old males were shot in what investigators described as a targeted and isolated incident.

Despite the swift response of emergency personnel and medical teams, Ethan later succumbed to his injuries. The second victim survived and remains in stable condition as recovery continues.

Police identified the suspect as 23-year-old John Wallace-Bey of New Castle. He was taken into custody in Philadelphia shortly after the shooting and is currently awaiting extradition to Delaware. He is expected to face multiple charges, including First-Degree Murder, First-Degree Attempted Murder, two counts of Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony, and Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon.

Court records show the suspect remains in custody after bail was denied, with an extradition hearing scheduled later this month as the investigation continues.

The sudden and violent nature of the incident has left a deep sense of sorrow within the community. Ethan’s passing serves as a painful reminder of how quickly lives can be changed, leaving loved ones and the wider community struggling to process the loss.

As those impacted reflect on this tragedy, Ethan is remembered as a young life gone too soon. His memory will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew him, and the impact of his passing will not be forgotten.

During this difficult time, the community extends its deepest condolences and support, standing together in grief and remembrance.
