RITTMAN, Ohio — A heartbreaking shooting in the city of Rittman has left the Wayne County community mourning after four people lost their lives in a tragic incident on Sunday night, July 5.
Authorities identified Brandon Fazekas, 38, as the suspect. The victims were identified as Christine McWilliams, 43; her 13-year-old daughter, McKinley “McKelsey” McWilliams; and Rittman Police Sgt. Scott Ries.
The devastating incident unfolded at a residence on the 90 block of Chippewa Trail after authorities received a 911 call reporting a break-in and shots fired at approximately 9:30 p.m.
According to officials, responding officers arrived at the scene and immediately encountered gunfire. During the exchange, Sgt. Scott Ries of the Rittman Police Department was struck. Despite emergency efforts, he later died from his injuries while serving in the line of duty.
Investigators believe Christine McWilliams and her teenage daughter had already been fatally shot before officers arrived at the residence. Their deaths have left family members, friends, and neighbors devastated as they remember a mother and daughter whose lives were tragically taken.
Authorities confirmed that Brandon Fazekas was also found deceased, and investigators believe he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation as officials continue working to determine the events that led to the deadly encounter.
The violent incident also injured four deputies from the Medina County Sheriff’s Office. Two deputies were transported to a hospital and remain in stable condition, while others were treated at the scene. A Wayne County Sheriff’s Office K-9, Vick, was also seriously injured after being shot during the response and continues receiving medical care.
Sgt. Ries was remembered as a dedicated law enforcement officer who served the Rittman Police Department for years and made the ultimate sacrifice while responding to protect others. His loss has deeply affected fellow officers, first responders, and members of the community.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation into the officer-involved shooting. Authorities continue to process evidence, speak with witnesses, and review the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
