A tragic crash in Godfrey has claimed the life of Anthony M. Stewart, 31, of Alton, leaving family, friends, and the community grieving his sudden loss.
According to the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded just before 3:30 a.m. to the 7400 block of Montclair Avenue after receiving a phone crash-detection alert. When authorities arrived, they found a black Jeep Grand Cherokee that had left the roadway and crashed into a tree.
Investigators said the Jeep had been traveling northbound on Montclair Avenue before the collision. For reasons that remain unknown, the vehicle left the roadway, struck a curb and a mailbox, and then overturned several times before coming to a stop.
Stewart, who was the driver and only occupant of the vehicle, was pronounced deceased following the crash.
The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation as authorities continue working to determine what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway.
