A tragic crash on Interstate 75 southbound in Scott County, Kentucky, has claimed the lives of two people and left two others injured.
According to Scott County Coroner Mark Sutton, the crash involved a vehicle carrying four occupants that struck an emergency vehicle while it was assisting at the scene of an unrelated earlier accident near the 141-mile marker of I-75.
The driver and front passenger of the vehicle were pronounced deceased at the scene. They were later identified as 61-year-old Darren Paul Nelson and 62-year-old Shauna Colleen Nelson, both of Knoxville, Tennessee. Authorities said the couple was traveling back home to Tennessee when the collision occurred.
The two occupants in the backseat were injured in the crash and transported to a Lexington hospital. Officials said they remained in stable condition.
The Scott County Sheriff’s Office said the crash caused significant traffic disruptions, with portions of I-75 closed while emergency crews worked at the scene. Traffic was diverted to U.S. 25 as authorities investigated the collision.
Officials confirmed that no first responders were injured in the crash.
The fatal collision remains under investigation by the Kentucky State Police, Scott County Sheriff’s Office, and Scott County Coroner’s Office.
