David Asbury Jr., 44, lost his life following an officer-involved shooting in Omaha, Nebraska, on Saturday evening, after police responded to a report of a suicidal person.
According to the Omaha Police Department, officers were called to the area of 55th and Pine streets shortly before 6 p.m. for a welfare check involving a person in crisis. Police said that shortly after officers arrived, a man inside the residence fired a weapon toward three officers.
Authorities identified the man as David Asbury Jr. Police said Asbury later exited the home and fired additional shots in the direction of officers. An officer then returned fire, and Asbury was struck and fell inside the residence.
Emergency responders provided assistance, but Asbury was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said a firearm was located next to him following the incident.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation. Under Nebraska state law, the case will be presented to a grand jury after the investigation is completed because the incident involved a person who died during an encounter with law enforcement.
One officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave while the investigation continues.
