WALSTONBURG, N.C. — A community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Colonial A. Hicks, 37, whose life ended following a tragic fiery crash on Interstate 587 near Saratoga on Tuesday, July 14, 2026.
Colonial’s life came to a sudden end after a serious collision that unfolded during the evening commute. According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 6:45 p.m. near the 34-mile marker of I-587 West, in the area west of N.C. 111/222 near Saratoga.
Investigators said Colonial was behind the wheel of a 2017 Dodge Charger traveling westbound when his vehicle struck the rear of a 2017 Ford Escape driven by Joshua A. Torain of Wilson. The impact sent Colonial’s vehicle off the roadway, where it traveled through a ditch before striking a tree.
The crash caused the Dodge Charger to catch fire immediately. Emergency responders arrived at the scene, but Colonial suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the location of the crash.
The driver of the Ford Escape was able to bring his vehicle to a controlled stop along the shoulder of the interstate and was not injured. Authorities continue to investigate the collision and have determined that speed was a contributing factor.
The sudden passing of Colonial A. Hicks has left his family, friends, and the Walstonburg community facing an unimaginable loss. His death serves as a painful reminder of how quickly life can change and how deeply one loss can affect an entire community.
