Family, friends, and members of the Knott County community are mourning the loss of Melisa Slone, 39, of Garner, who died following a single-vehicle crash early Friday morning.
According to Kentucky State Police, troopers from Post 13 in Hazard responded shortly before 4:00 a.m. on July 17, 2026, to a crash on KY-15 in the Sassafras community of Knott County.
A preliminary investigation found that Slone was driving a white Chevrolet Silverado northbound on KY-15 when the vehicle struck a rock in the roadway. The impact caused the truck to lose control and overturn, resulting in Slone being ejected from the vehicle.
The Knott County Coroner’s Office pronounced Slone deceased at the scene.
Authorities said a preliminary investigation indicated that no seat belt was in use at the time of the crash. Alcohol is believed to have been a contributing factor, and toxicology results are still pending.
The investigation remains ongoing and is being led by Kentucky State Police Trooper Todd Whitson.
