A devastating crash involving a utility truck and a commercial vehicle on Bass Road in north Macon left one person dead and another injured Monday morning, according to local authorities.
Officials with the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office said the collision happened near Snows Memorial Chapel, located in the 1400 block of Bass Road, where emergency crews responded to a major crash scene shortly after the incident occurred.
According to investigators, the crash involved a Chevrolet GMT 3500 utility truck and a Peterbilt 358 commercial truck traveling eastbound along Bass Road. Preliminary findings indicate the driver of the utility truck attempted to avoid colliding with a red sedan that had stopped while waiting to make a turn onto Westchester Drive.
Authorities say the driver moved into the opposite lane of traffic in an effort to avoid striking the sedan. While in the oncoming lane, the utility truck collided head-on with the approaching commercial truck, causing the smaller vehicle to overturn upon impact.
Investigators later identified the driver of the utility truck as 36-year-old Robert Jackson, who suffered fatal injuries in the violent collision. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Luann Stone.
The driver of the Peterbilt truck, a 62-year-old man, was injured during the crash and received treatment from paramedics at the scene before being transported to a local hospital. Authorities say he is currently listed in stable condition.
Both directions of Bass Road remained closed for several hours while first responders cleared the wreckage and investigators worked to determine the circumstances that led to the deadly crash. The roadway was later reopened shortly after noon.
Officials say the investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue gathering details surrounding the fatal collision.
