Austin police are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred Monday night at an AutoZone in southeast Austin in what investigators believe was an attempted robbery.
The Austin Police Department said officers responded to the 2200 block of East Riverside Drive at approximately 10:47 p.m. after multiple reports of a shooting. The first responding officer arrived within minutes and located 28-year-old Jose Salgado-Amador suffering from gunshot wounds in the parking lot of the AutoZone at 2237 East Riverside Drive.
According to police, the officer immediately began life-saving measures, including CPR and the application of a tourniquet, before Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services arrived and transported the victim to a local hospital. Salgado-Amador was later pronounced deceased at 11:56 p.m.
Investigators say Salgado-Amador was working as a mechanic in the parking lot at the time of the incident when he was approached by a suspect who demanded property. Police said the confrontation escalated, and the suspect shot him before fleeing the scene in a light-colored sedan.
The suspect remains at large. Authorities described him as a Hispanic male between 15 and 20 years old, last seen wearing a gray hoodie. Despite an active search, no arrests have been made.
Detectives believe the incident was an attempted robbery and continue to gather evidence, including surveillance footage and witness statements, to identify and locate the suspect.
Police are urging anyone with information about the shooting or the suspect’s whereabouts to contact investigators as the case remains active and ongoing.
