In Loving Memory of Miguel Cardenas-Valencia

Family, friends, and members of the Grand Island community are mourning the tragic and sudden loss of 38-year-old Miguel Cardenas-Valencia of Texas, who was killed in a fatal two-vehicle crash early Thursday morning on U.S. Highway 281 south of Grand Island, Nebraska.

According to the Grand Island Police Department, officers were dispatched around 5:20 a.m. to a crash scene located approximately one-fifth of a mile north of Wildwood Drive. When officers arrived, they found a serious collision involving a southbound 2015 gray Ford F-150 and a northbound 2010 Chevrolet Equinox.

Preliminary investigation indicates that the Chevrolet Equinox crossed the median and entered into oncoming southbound traffic, where it collided head-on with the Ford F-150. The impact caused significant damage to both vehicles and led to a major emergency response in the early morning hours.

Authorities confirmed that Miguel Cardenas-Valencia, who was driving the Ford F-150, was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials stated that his next of kin have been notified of his passing.

Inside the Chevrolet Equinox were 25-year-old Cody Bailey and 28-year-old Luis Alvarado, both of Grand Island. Both individuals suffered critical injuries in the crash and were transported from the scene before being airlifted to receive advanced medical treatment. Their current conditions have not been publicly updated.

Investigators have not yet determined whether drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash. Authorities say the cause remains under active investigation as they continue to examine roadway evidence, vehicle positioning, and other contributing factors that may have led to the Equinox crossing into oncoming traffic.

The crash led to significant disruptions along U.S. Highway 281 as emergency crews worked to secure the area, assist the injured, and clear the roadway. Traffic was temporarily impacted during the investigation and cleanup process.
