LAKE NORDEN, S.D. — An adult male has died and a juvenile is receiving medical treatment following a tragic drowning incident at Lake Mary on Sunday evening, according to authorities.
Officials have identified the deceased as 43-year-old Levi Griffin.
Emergency crews were dispatched at approximately 7:36 p.m. on June 21, 2026, to the area of Bluejay Street, about 0.7 miles west of 452nd Avenue, just east of Lake Norden, after a 911 call reported a water emergency.
According to the Hamlin County Sheriff’s Office, a family was fishing along the edge of Lake Mary when a juvenile fell into the water near the lake’s outlet. Griffin entered the water in an attempt to rescue the child.
Authorities said both individuals were impacted by the incident, with Griffin ultimately drowning during the rescue attempt. The juvenile was later recovered and transported for medical treatment. Their current condition has not been released.
Emergency responders from multiple agencies worked the scene following the distress call, and the area was temporarily secured as recovery efforts were conducted.
The Hamlin County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. Officials have not released additional details at this time.
