3 women dead in south philadelphia shooting; investigators identify grandmother as suspect

A devastating shooting inside a South Philadelphia home has left three women dead in what investigators are describing as an apparent murder-suicide, leaving a quiet neighborhood in shock and mourning.

Police said officers were called to a residence on the 2800 block of South 10th Street at approximately 5:32 p.m. on Monday after reports of gunfire inside the home. When emergency responders arrived, they discovered three women suffering from gunshot wounds.

All three victims were pronounced dead at the scene just minutes later, at approximately 5:38 p.m., authorities confirmed.

The victims have been identified as Janice Picano, 67, Angelina Picano, 18, and Denise Grottini, 55. Investigators believe Janice Picano shot and killed the two other women inside the residence before turning the weapon on herself.

Police said all three women died from gunshot wounds to the head. Their identities were released after family members were notified.

At this time, investigators have not confirmed a motive behind the deadly incident, and the circumstances leading up to the shooting remain unclear. Detectives with the Philadelphia Police Department’s Homicide Unit are continuing to process evidence and speak with possible witnesses as part of an active investigation.

Neighbors described the block as typically peaceful, saying they were stunned by the violence that unfolded behind closed doors. Several residents expressed sorrow and disbelief, noting that nothing in the area suggested such a tragic event was unfolding inside the home.

Authorities have stated that there is no indication of additional suspects, and the case is currently being treated as an isolated incident based on preliminary findings.

As the investigation continues, officials say the focus remains on understanding what led to the fatal confrontation and providing answers to the grieving families.

The South Philadelphia community now faces the painful aftermath of a tragedy that has taken three lives and left many searching for clarity and comfort in its wake.
