With profound sadness, family, friends, classmates, and members of the Norwich and New London school communities are mourning the heartbreaking loss of 18-year-old Leilani Rochelle Robinson, who died Thursday evening in a tragic single-vehicle crash in Waterford.
According to Connecticut State Police, the crash occurred around 5:24 p.m. when Robinson was driving a 2006 Lexus ES 330 north on the Montville Connector ramp to Interstate 395. Investigators say the vehicle left the left shoulder into a grassy median, reentered the roadway, crossed to the opposite side, and ultimately left the road again before striking a tree. She was found unresponsive at the scene and was later pronounced deceased. Authorities continue to review the circumstances surrounding the crash and have asked witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to come forward.
Robinson, of Norwich, was remembered as a bright and driven young woman with a strong presence both in athletics and in her school community. A recent graduate of New London High School Multi-Magnet Campus, she stood out as an All-State cheerleader and a dedicated track athlete. Those who knew her recall her energy, discipline, and the encouragement she offered to teammates and friends alike, often bringing positivity to every space she entered.
Her passing is especially heartbreaking as it came just days before what would have been her 19th birthday, a milestone her loved ones had hoped to celebrate with her. Instead, they are left to grieve a life that ended far too soon, and to hold onto the memories of her accomplishments, her laughter, and the promise she carried for the future.
In the wake of this tragedy, the community has come together in mourning, sharing condolences and tributes that reflect the impact Robinson made in her short life. Vigils and messages of support have emphasized not only the shock of her sudden passing but also the deep love and pride felt by those closest to her.
State police continue to investigate and have urged anyone with information related to the crash to contact Trooper Christopher Breet at Troop E in Montville. As her family navigates this unimaginable loss, they are surrounded by a community united in grief and remembrance, honoring a young life that touched many and ended far too soon.
