With profound sadness and heavy hearts, family, friends, and the Brookwood community are mourning the tragic deaths of Jose Felix Alvarez-Duenas, 31, and Jazmine Alexis Bates, 22, a University of Alabama student, whose lives ended far too soon following a devastating shooting inside a Brookwood home.
Authorities said Jose, 31, and Jazmine, 22, were found deceased after Brookwood Police responded to a welfare check at a residence in the 12900 block of Alabama Junction Road. The call was made after the homeowner, who was out of the country, became concerned after being unable to reach the person staying at the home over the holiday weekend.
According to investigators, the homeowner reviewed doorbell camera footage and noticed a suspicious person near the property during the late-night and early-morning hours of July 5 and 6. The information led the landlord to request that police check on the residence.
When officers arrived and entered the home, they discovered Jose Felix Alvarez-Duenas near the front entrance. A second victim, Jazmine Alexis Bates, was later found in a back bedroom closet. Investigators confirmed that both had suffered fatal gunshot wounds. A dog inside the home was also found shot and killed.

Jose and Jazmine are being remembered for who they were beyond the circumstances surrounding their deaths — for their memories, their relationships, and the moments they shared with those who cared about them.
