Family, friends, and members of the Whitakers community are mourning the tragic and sudden loss of Herbert Earl Lawrence Jr., whose life was cut short following a deadly shooting incident on Saturday morning, June 13, 2026.
According to the Nash County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded at approximately 9:55 a.m. to reports of gunfire at the Dollar General located at 211 S. White Street in Whitakers. Authorities said a heated altercation outside the store escalated into an exchange of gunfire, resulting in a fatal shooting involving two individuals.
During the investigation, officials confirmed that Herbert Earl Lawrence Jr. was found suffering from gunshot wounds and was pronounced deceased as a result of his injuries. Emergency responders and deputies worked at the scene, but despite their efforts, he could not be saved.
Authorities also reported that a second victim, Wilbert Silver III, was located nearby at the intersection of Nash and White Streets and later succumbed to his injuries after being transported for medical attention. Investigators believe both men were involved in the confrontation that led to the deadly exchange of gunfire.
The Nash County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, including what led to the altercation and subsequent shooting. No additional details have been released at this time as detectives work to gather evidence and speak with witnesses.
