A deadly two-vehicle crash in Washington Township early Saturday morning has left one man dead and another person injured, according to authorities. The crash occurred at the intersection of Route 66 and Mamont Drive in Westmoreland County and remains under active investigation.
Emergency responders from Murrysville Medic 1 and multiple fire and rescue units were dispatched to the scene following reports of a serious collision. Upon arrival, crews found significant damage to both vehicles involved, including a truck with heavy front-end damage and a white sedan that had gone down a hillside off the roadway.
According to the Westmoreland County Coroner’s Office, the driver of the sedan has been identified as Nicholas R. Grzybek of Apollo, Pennsylvania. Investigators say Grzybek was traveling northbound on Route 66 when, for reasons still unknown, his vehicle crossed the center line near Mamont Drive and entered the southbound lane.
The sedan then collided head-on with a Nissan pickup truck traveling in the opposite direction. Authorities confirmed that Grzybek suffered fatal blunt force injuries and was pronounced dead as a result of the crash.
The driver of the pickup truck was injured in the collision and transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Officials have not yet released details regarding the extent of those injuries.
Drone images from the scene showed the severity of the impact, with both vehicles heavily damaged and resting in separate areas off the roadway.
The Washington Township Police Department is leading the investigation, with assistance from multiple agencies including local fire departments, Pennsylvania State Police, PennDOT, and the Westmoreland County Coroner’s Office.
Authorities continue to investigate what caused the vehicle to cross into oncoming traffic as they work to determine all contributing factors in the fatal crash.
