Family members have identified the man who was fatally stabbed on the Michael S. Van Leesten Memorial Bridge in downtown Providence as Gerald “Jerry” Blair, a 40-year-old Providence resident who was experiencing homelessness.
The fatal attack occurred at approximately 10:50 p.m. on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, when Providence Police officers and Providence Fire Department personnel responded to reports of a stabbing on the popular pedestrian bridge.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers found Blair suffering from multiple stab wounds to the chest. First responders immediately began CPR before transporting him by rescue ambulance to Rhode Island Hospital. Despite extensive lifesaving efforts by medical personnel, Blair later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The Providence Police Department has classified the incident as a homicide and continues to actively investigate the circumstances surrounding the deadly attack.
Investigation Continues
According to Major David Lapatin of the Providence Police Department, preliminary information suggests Blair was assaulted by a group of young adults or juveniles.
Witness statements and video footage reportedly indicate that between eight and ten juveniles were gathered near Blair at the time of the assault. Investigators are working to determine the role each individual may have played in the incident.
Following the stabbing, officers broadcast descriptions of potential suspects to patrol units throughout downtown Providence. A short time later, two young males matching witness descriptions were detained near Kennedy Plaza.
The individuals were initially held in separate police cruisers while detectives reviewed surveillance footage and witness-recorded videos. Investigators then conducted a show-up identification, allowing witnesses to determine whether the detained individuals were involved in the attack.
After the identification process, both individuals were handcuffed and transported separately to Providence Police headquarters for further questioning.
Detectives with the Providence Police Bureau of Criminal Identification (BCI) processed evidence from both the crime scene and the detained juveniles. Officers were observed photographing evidence, collecting items into evidence bags, and swabbing what appeared to be a knife recovered during the investigation.
Authorities have not confirmed whether the recovered knife was the weapon used in the fatal stabbing, noting that forensic testing remains ongoing.
While multiple sources familiar with the investigation indicated that at least two persons of interest were taken into custody overnight, police have not announced any formal arrests or confirmed whether criminal charges have been filed.
Family Mourns Tragic Loss
Blair’s family is devastated as they struggle to come to terms with his violent death.
His cousin, Dawn Rabah, described the attack as intentional and deeply disturbing, saying her family is heartbroken by the circumstances surrounding his killing.
She urged anyone with information to come forward, emphasizing that even anonymous tips could help investigators bring those responsible to justice. Rabah said she hopes members of the public will imagine how they would feel if their own loved one had been killed and choose to help provide answers for Blair’s family.
Police Seeking Witnesses
In a statement released Wednesday morning, Providence officials confirmed that detectives remain actively investigating the homicide.
Police are asking anyone who witnessed the attack or who may have cellphone or surveillance video from the area around the Michael S. Van Leesten Memorial Bridge at the time of the stabbing to contact the Providence Police Department.
Investigators continue working to identify everyone involved and determine exactly what led to the fatal assault that claimed the life of Gerald “Jerry” Blair.
