With profound sadness, family, friends, and members of the Roswell, New Mexico, community are mourning the tragic loss of Andrew Lujan-Huerta, 46, a homeless man whose life ended in a heartbreaking act of violence on Tuesday evening, July 14, 2026.
According to the Roswell Police Department, officers are investigating Lujan-Huerta’s death as a homicide after he was found deceased in the Hondo River channel in the southwest part of the city.
Authorities said a 911 call was received shortly before 7:30 p.m. Tuesday from a man who reported that he had discovered his friend’s body in the river channel behind a trailer park on McCall Loop, just west of South Sunset Avenue. Officers arrived at the scene and found a man who had suffered at least one gunshot wound.
The victim was later identified as Andrew Lujan-Huerta. His death has left those who knew him grieving and searching for answers as investigators continue working to uncover the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
The Roswell Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division is actively handling the case, and officials have emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing.
Lujan-Huerta’s death comes as another homicide investigation involving a homeless man remains open in Roswell. On June 14, 2026, the body of Kent Hoffman, 56, was discovered in the Hondo River channel near the downtown area. Police said investigators do not believe the two cases are connected.
As detectives continue their work, authorities are asking anyone with information about either investigation to come forward and assist with the search for answers.
