With profound sadness and heavy hearts, family, friends, and members of the Newburgh Heights community are mourning the heartbreaking loss of Winfield Starcher Jr., 61, whose life ended following a tragic dump truck crash Friday afternoon.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred shortly after 3:00 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of Harvard Avenue near Washington Park Boulevard.
Investigators said Winfield was driving a Mack dump truck when, for reasons still under investigation, the vehicle traveled off the right side of the roadway and struck three utility poles. The truck then crossed the center line before striking a curb on the opposite side of the road.
Authorities said Winfield sustained fatal injuries in the collision and was pronounced deceased. The Ohio State Highway Patrol also reported that he was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
Following the incident, Harvard Avenue was closed for several hours as emergency crews worked to investigate the scene, remove the damaged vehicle, and repair the affected utility infrastructure. The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted by Newburgh Heights Fire and EMS, the Newburgh Heights Police Department, Kufner Towing, and The Illuminating Company.
