With profound sadness and heavy hearts, family, friends, and members of the Deville, Louisiana, community are mourning the heartbreaking loss of Kent Sanson, 16, whose life ended in a tragic single-vehicle crash in LaSalle Parish early Friday morning, July 17.
According to the Louisiana State Police Troop E, the fatal crash occurred at approximately 4:49 a.m. on Hunt Road near the Dewey Wills Wildlife Management Area in LaSalle Parish. Authorities reported that a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by 18-year-old Reese McKenzie of Deville, was traveling north when, for reasons still under investigation, the driver lost control of the vehicle. The truck left the roadway and overturned, causing multiple occupants to be ejected.
Kent Sanson, who was a passenger in the vehicle, sustained fatal injuries and was sadly pronounced deceased. Louisiana State Police stated that he was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
The driver, Reese McKenzie, also unrestrained, suffered moderate injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Five additional passengers, who were likewise not restrained, sustained moderate injuries and were also taken to a local hospital. Investigators collected routine toxicology samples, and authorities believe impairment is a suspected factor in the crash.
Following the investigation, Louisiana State Police arrested McKenzie on charges including vehicular homicide, operating a vehicle while impaired, careless operation, open container, and three counts of vehicular negligent injuring. He was transported to and processed at the LaSalle Parish Sheriff’s Office. The investigation remains ongoing.
