A heartbreaking act of violence early Sunday morning has left the Hopewell community grieving after a 17-year-old lost his life and another teenager was injured in a deadly shooting, according to authorities.
According to the Hopewell Police Department, Hopewell Telecommunications received a report of a shooting at approximately 1:18 a.m. on Sunday, June 14, prompting officers to immediately respond to the scene.
Police were dispatched to the 1000 block of Langston Park Drive, located off Winston Churchill, where officers discovered 17-year-old Azarieus Jozsiah Wooden Hill suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite rapid emergency response efforts and attempts to save his life, authorities confirmed that the teenager was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators say officers quickly spotted a suspect vehicle fleeing the area shortly after the shooting. A brief police pursuit followed, leading authorities to successfully apprehend two juvenile suspects believed to be connected to the deadly incident.
During the course of the incident, one of the suspects, also a 17-year-old juvenile, sustained a gunshot wound. Officials said the suspect was transported to a nearby hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Police confirmed that both juvenile suspects are currently facing multiple charges, including juvenile in possession of a firearm, reckless handling of a firearm, discharging a firearm within the city of Hopewell, and eluding police. Authorities also stated that additional charges remain pending as detectives continue investigating the full circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The tragic death of Azarieus has sent shockwaves throughout the Hopewell community, leaving family members, friends, classmates, and loved ones mourning the devastating loss of a young life taken far too soon.
As investigators continue gathering evidence and searching for answers, authorities are urging anyone with information connected to the case to come forward.
