BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — A late-night shooting in southwest Birmingham claimed the life of a 53-year-old man after a barrage of gunfire erupted outside an apartment building Monday night.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Mark Jhawntee Louis, 53, of Birmingham.
According to authorities, officers with the Birmingham Police Department’s West Precinct were dispatched at approximately 10:42 p.m. Monday to an apartment building located at 1017 Tuscaloosa Avenue after the city’s Shot Spotter system detected 16 rounds of gunfire in the area.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found Louis lying outside the two-story apartment building. He was pronounced dead at the scene from apparent gunshot wounds.
Birmingham Police Sgt. LaQuitta Wade said nearby residents heard the sound of gunfire, discovered the injured victim outside the building, and immediately called 911 for help.
Investigators have not released any information about a possible suspect or motive in the shooting. No arrests have been made as detectives continue working to determine the circumstances that led to the deadly incident.
The shooting marks Birmingham’s 26th homicide of the year, adding to concerns surrounding violent crime in the city.
