In Loving Memory of Andrea, Sofie, and Taylor Stawny

Family, friends, and members of the Springfield community are mourning the tragic loss of 19-year-old Andrea Stawny and 17-year-old Sofie Stawny, who were recovered following a devastating incident at Lake Springfield over the weekend.

Authorities with the Springfield Police Department confirmed that both victims were located after extensive water search-and-rescue operations at the Lake Springfield dam. Andrea was recovered on Tuesday approximately a quarter-mile downriver from the dam, while Sofie was found near the dam on Wednesday after continued recovery efforts.

Their sudden deaths have left loved ones heartbroken and the community in deep sorrow, as family members struggle to comprehend how a day on the water turned into an unimaginable tragedy. What began as a recreational outing has now left two young lives lost far too soon, creating an overwhelming sense of grief among those who knew them.

Officials also confirmed that 40-year-old Taylor Stawny remains missing, as crews continue coordinated search efforts involving land, water, and air resources. Approximately 40 rescuers from multiple agencies are still working tirelessly in hopes of bringing closure to the ongoing search. Meanwhile, 12-year-old Aurelie Stawny was rescued from the spillway waters on Sunday, transported to a hospital for treatment, and has since been released.

Investigators said the four individuals were traveling together in a kayak and two inflatable tubes that were connected at the time of the incident. The circumstances surrounding what led to the tragedy remain under investigation as authorities continue to piece together the sequence of events.

As news of the recovery spread, an outpouring of grief followed throughout the community of Springfield. Friends, classmates, and neighbors have expressed shock and heartbreak, remembering the victims for their youth, their presence in the lives of others, and the painful void their loss leaves behind.
