With profound sadness, family, friends, and members of the Mundelein community are mourning the heartbreaking loss of Herbert Lomax, 48, who died in a tragic shooting on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at a residence in the 500 block of Deepwoods Drive in Mundelein, Illinois.
According to authorities, officers responded to the home around 11:40 a.m. after reports of a shooting. Police said Deandre Harris, 21, was at the residence of his girlfriend when he became involved in an argument with Herbert. During the confrontation, authorities allege that Harris produced a pistol and began shooting.
Herbert was struck multiple times during the incident. Despite emergency response efforts, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The Lake County Coroner’s Office later identified him as Herbert Lomax, 48, of Mundelein.
A woman who also lived at the residence was also struck by gunfire during the shooting. She suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening and was transported for medical treatment.
Following the deadly shooting, Harris was taken into custody near the Indiana border later that afternoon. Authorities said the arrest was partially captured by SkyCam9. Harris has since been charged with first-degree murder and aggravated battery with a firearm as investigators continue to examine the events surrounding the incident.
