With profound sadness, family, friends, and members of the Lubbock, Texas community are mourning the heartbreaking loss of Sammy Zapata, 19, whose life ended following a tragic vehicle crash on Friday afternoon.
The devastating collision happened near the intersection of FM 179 and FM 2641 in Lubbock County. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Sammy was traveling eastbound on FM 2641 when his vehicle approached a stop sign at the intersection with FM 179. Investigators said his vehicle continued through the stop sign and collided with the side of another vehicle driven by 87-year-old Burl Trotter of Littlefield.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene after the crash was reported around 4:03 p.m. Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office deputies initially responded before the investigation was turned over to the Texas Department of Public Safety. Crews from the Shallowater Police Department, Carlisle Fire Department, Shallowater Fire Department, and Emergency Medical Services also responded to assist.
Burl Trotter was pronounced deceased at the scene. Sammy was transported to University Medical Center for treatment, but despite medical efforts, he later succumbed to the serious injuries he suffered in the crash.
Sammy’s sudden passing has left his family, friends, and everyone who knew him devastated. A young life filled with promise was taken far too soon, leaving behind memories that will forever be cherished by those who loved him.
