The York Public Schools community is mourning the tragic loss of Randy Johnson, 70, a respected coach and former educator who died following a crash Monday morning in Polk County, Nebraska.
According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened shortly after 6 a.m. on Highway 92, about eight miles west of Osceola.
Authorities said dispatchers received a 911 call reporting that a pickup truck had struck an ATV near the intersection of F Road. Investigators determined that the ATV was traveling west on the highway when a pickup truck struck it from behind, causing both vehicles to leave the roadway and enter the north ditch before coming to rest in a tree line.
The driver of the pickup told investigators they did not see the ATV before the collision and struck the rear of the vehicle.
Officials said the ATV driver, identified as Randy Johnson of Osceola, was ejected into the north ditch during the crash and later died from his injuries.
Johnson was the current track coach at York Public Schools and a former teacher who left a lasting impact on students, athletes, and colleagues throughout his career.
Following news of his death, York Public Schools announced that counseling services would be available for staff and students. Crisis team members were made available in the York High School Counseling Office to support those affected by the loss.
York Public Schools Superintendent Mitch Bartholomew shared condolences, saying the district was deeply saddened by the passing of Johnson and that their thoughts are with the Johnson family.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office also extended condolences to all families affected by the tragedy.
The crash remains under investigation. The Osceola Fire and Rescue, Nebraska State Patrol, and Augie’s Auto Body and Repair assisted emergency crews at the scene.
