A fatal motorcycle crash in Huntersville claimed the life of a 36-year-old man Wednesday evening, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP).
Authorities identified the victim as Tywan Jacquez Jordan, who died after a collision on Interstate 77 South that caused major traffic disruptions through the Lake Norman area.
The crash was reported just after 6:30 p.m. north of Gilead Road near mile marker 23. Troopers said Jordan was operating a 2001 Kawasaki 900 in the general purpose lanes when he entered the toll lanes through an “unauthorized area.” Once inside the restricted section, his motorcycle collided with a gray Tesla already traveling in the toll lanes.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene, but Jordan sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead. No additional information regarding injuries to the occupants of the Tesla has been released.
Following the crash, all southbound lanes of Interstate 77 and the northbound toll lanes were shut down for several hours as investigators worked the scene and cleared debris. The closure resulted in significant backups and delays throughout the Huntersville and Lake Norman corridor. All lanes have since reopened to traffic.
Investigators with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, along with Huntersville Police, remained on scene to reconstruct the events leading up to the collision and determine the exact circumstances of the crash. Officials have not released further details regarding contributing factors.
The incident remains under investigation, and authorities have not indicated whether any charges will be filed.
As the community processes the sudden loss, loved ones are remembering Jordan’s life and mourning a tragedy that unfolded in a matter of seconds on a busy stretch of interstate.
Further updates will be provided as investigators release more information.
