IN LOVING MEMORY OF DEREK SELF

With heavy hearts, family members, friends, and members of the Flint community are mourning the tragic and sudden loss of 23-year-old Derek Self, whose life was cut short in a devastating two-vehicle crash on Saturday afternoon in Flint Township.

The heartbreaking incident has left loved ones in shock and deep sorrow as they try to come to terms with the loss of a young man whose presence meant so much to those who knew him. Friends and family are now left holding onto memories while grieving a future that was taken far too soon.

According to the Flint Township Police Department, officers responded at approximately 1:00 p.m. on June 20, 2026, to the intersection of Maple Avenue and Fenton Road following reports of a serious traffic crash.

A preliminary investigation indicates that a 26-year-old Grand Blanc Township man was traveling westbound on Maple Avenue at a high rate of speed when he failed to stop for a red traffic signal. His vehicle then struck a car driven by Derek Self, who was traveling southbound through the intersection.

Despite immediate life-saving efforts by bystanders and emergency responders, Derek Self was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Authorities reported that the intersection was closed for several hours while multiple agencies assisted in processing the crash, including the Flint Township Fire Department, Genesee County Sheriff’s Office, Grand Blanc Township Police Department, and Burton Police Department.

Investigators believe that alcohol and/or drug impairment, along with reckless driving, may have been contributing factors. The investigation remains ongoing and will later be reviewed by the Genesee County Prosecutor’s Office for possible charges.

As the community mourns, tributes and condolences are beginning to pour in for Derek, remembering him as a beloved son, friend, and member of the community whose life ended far too soon.

Though his time was cut short, Derek Self will be remembered for the impact he made and the memories he leaves behind.
